Map the systems before connecting them

Identify the ERP product, version, available interfaces and business objects involved. SAP Business One, SAP ECC and SAP S/4HANA do not expose identical integration options. An initial scope should confirm the supported interfaces with the system owner rather than assume one connector fits every deployment.

Define ownership and field mapping

Agree which system owns each record, how identifiers map and what should happen when information conflicts. Customer references, document status and business units often need explicit mapping. Avoid introducing a second source of truth without a reconciliation process.

Separate reporting from write operations

A reporting dashboard may need read access only. Creating or updating ERP documents is a different workflow with different permissions, validation and approval requirements. Start with the minimum access needed and test against an approved non-production environment where available.

Plan for retries and reconciliation

Network errors and partial failures are normal integration cases. Define duplicate prevention, retry limits and an exception queue that an operations team can review. Useful deliverables include mapping documentation, representative test cases and instructions for monitoring and recovery.
